Over the past 20 years, Inder Makin, M.D., Ph.D. has been active in strategy development and implementation of medical device technology, spanning the spectrum from lab to market. He is a co-founder of Guided Therapy Systems, LLC (VP Applications and Clinical Development), Ulthera, Inc. and Xthetix, Inc. (VP Clinical and Application Development). Since 2004, he has led development and implementation of the pre-clinical and clinical strategy supporting the Ulthera System for cosmetic ultrasound applications. Scientifically, he has been involved in the basic and applied research of ultrasound-tissue interaction, sound-bubble interaction and propagation of high-intensity ultrasound through tissue-like media.
During his assignments in academia and industry, Dr. Makin has developed medical ultrasound-based research programs at various institutes, taking concepts through feasibility, and evolving them into product embodiments, such as, catheter-based devices for intravascular thrombolysis (Univ. of Washington/EKOS), transdermal drug delivery devices (Ethicon Endo-Surgery/Janssen Research Foundation), non-invasive and intracorporeal tissue ablation devices (Ethicon Endo-Surgery/GTS, Inc.), and ultrasound based image-treat devices for facial tightening (GTS/Ulthera). From 1997 – 2004, Dr. Makin was the Principal Investigator and Technical Lead at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. J&J, leading a world-class team of engineering scientists in the development of ultrasound energy-based tissue therapy systems and surgical devices for therapeutic applications. He has worked as a Research Engineer at University of Washington, Applied Physics Laboratory, Research Fellow at Swarthmore College and Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, and Research Assistant at University of Texas at Austin. Between 1985 and 1989 Dr. Makin worked at Drägerwerk AG in Lübeck, Germany and Deutsches Elektronen – Synchrotron, Hamburg (DESY), both in the area of medical physics and instrumentation.
Dr. Makin is a recognized scientist in the field of medical instrumentation and ultrasound, having published more than 20 scientific papers, chaired various national and international conferences, and has 8 allowed and issued patents (filed >40). He completed his medical training (M.D.) at Jiwaji, University, India in 1985 and his engineering degree (“Diplom Ingenieur” in Biomedical Engineering) from Fachhochschule Hamburg, Germany in 1989. In 1994, Dr. Makin completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Univ. of Texas at Austin, with specialization in nonlinear and medical acoustics. He is also an accredited medical sonographer (RDMS).
